What is SAIL & why is it such a big celebration this year?
SAIL Amsterdam is one of the largest nautical events in the world and takes place once every five years in the port of Amsterdam. It all started in 1975, when the city celebrated its 700th anniversary. To add extra sparkle to that anniversary, a major sailing event was organized under the name “Sail Amsterdam 700.” The success was overwhelming: thousands of spectators flocked to see the impressive fleet of tall ships, naval vessels, and traditional sailing ships. Since then, SAIL has grown into a recurring spectacle that attracts millions of visitors.
In 2025, SAIL will celebrate a special moment: the 50th anniversary since the first edition in 1975. This tenth edition promises to be extra festive. Not only will we look back on half a century of maritime history, connection, and cooperation, but we will also look ahead to the future of sustainable sailing and international friendship on the water. And going back to how it all began, this year we are also celebrating the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam. The port of Amsterdam will once again be the setting for an impressive parade of historic and modern ships from all over the world.
SAIL 2025 is not just another edition — it is a tribute to fifty years of nautical heritage, culture, and bringing people together on the water.
